Mathematics

Mathematics are fundamental at Harkness. All students must complete a minimum three-year sequence of study in grades 10 through 12. Typically, between 70 and 80 percent of Harkness students take math through AP Calculus or beyond. The mathematics department strives to develop a broad understanding of the nature of mathematics by balancing the “hows and whys” of the subject.

The department seeks to develop in students an understanding of the fundaments and structure of a mathematical system and a working understanding of mathematics’ inductive and investigative processes. Individual problem-solving skills are nurtured while recognizing that understanding a problem-solving process may be more important than the results. The department seeks to instill a level of competence that enables students to advance confidently to and succeed in higher mathematics.

52.2% of Harkness students obtained an outstanding grade in mathematics in the 2017 Enlace federal test compared to the national average of 4.3%. Also, students constantly participate and represent the state in math Olympics.
